چکیده

Abstract Decline in water table the Ogallala Aquifer, along with soil degradation, has threatened sustainability of agriculture US High Plains region. Circular grass buffers center pivot irrigated cropping systems could support sustainable crop production by providing multiple ecosystem services. This study evaluated organic matter (SOM), nutrients, and other selected health indicators under circular buffer strip grasses (BSG), adjacent corn ( Zea mays L.) (BSC), continuous conventional (CCC) 0–80 cm profile. Soil samples were collected from strips for 5 years (2017–2021) analyzed nitrate N (NO 3 − ‐N), pH, electrical conductivity, cation exchange capacity, SOM, nutrients. The NO ‐N CCC 0–20 (18.4 mg kg −1 ) 60–80 (4.97 1.56 1.96 times higher than BSC. was significantly lower BSG treatments cm, 20–40, 40–60 depths. SOM similar among all treatments. Response nutrients varied inter‐annually. pH depth 0.1 0.3 units (pH = 7.7) BSC BSG. conductivity 37.5% 25% greater (0.24 0.24 dS m 20–40 depths, respectively. Grass maintaining despite no irrigation, less residual buffer, rapid changes suggest potential to maintain semi‐arid facing transition dryland.

Impact of gypsum applied to grass buffer strips on reducing soluble p in surface water runoff.

The threat of P transport from land applied manure has resulted in water quality concerns. Research was conducted to evaluate gypsum as a soil amendment applied to grass buffer strips for reducing soluble P in surface runoff. A simulated concentrated flow was created in an established tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) pasture. Poultry litter (PL) was applied at a rate of 250 kg N ha(-1)...

Assessment of Drought impact on Irrigated Agriculture in Lorestan Province

Agriculture in Lorestan Province is based on irrigated and rainfed agriculture, which uses two sources of surface water and groundwater. One of the most important natural hazards affecting the Lorestan Province agriculture is the occurrence of drought and its consequences. The main purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of drought on irrigated agriculture in this province. The data...

Dissolved Phosphorus Retention in Buffer Strips: Influence of Slope and Soil Type.

Phosphorus (P) contributes to eutrophication of surface waters and buffer strips may be implemented to reduce its transfer from agricultural sources to watercourses. This study was conducted to test the hypothesis that soil type and slope influence the retention of dissolved organic P and inorganic orthophosphate in agricultural runoff in 2-m-wide buffer strip soils. A solution, comprised of di...

Controlling nitrate leaching in irrigated agriculture.

The impact of improved irrigation and nutrient practices on ground water quality was assessed at the Nebraska Management System Evaluation Area using ground water quality data collected from 16 depths at 31 strategically located multilevel samplers three times annually from 1991 to 1996. The site was sectioned into four 13.4-ha management fields: (i) a conventional furrow-irrigated corn (Zea ma...

Effect of grass filter strips management on reduction of soil loss from upland field

Abstract This study dealt with the reduction of soil loss from variously managed grass filter strips. Slope plots under a rainfall simulator were employed in this study. In order to investigate the effect of grass filter strips on the reduction of soil loss, the amount of soil supplied was compared with soil loss in each plot. The reduction of soil loss from cut weeds was similar to that from n...
